Tribal Belly Dance Basic Steps (Phase 1):

In this 4 week series, using both slow movements and fast steps we'll get you dancing in your first class! Learn all the basic tribal belly dance steps in a four-week cycle incorporating core strength and posture. Plus, intro to zils (finger cymbals). This class is perfect for learning the foundations of ATS Belly Dance. It is also the ideal class for those of you that just want to dance for fun or as a workout.

  • Week 1: Taxeem, Floreo, Snake Arms, Shimmies (+ Overview of all Fast Steps)
  • Week 2: Circle Turn, Egyptian Basic, Intro to Zills + Review
  • Week 3: Bodywave, Arabic Step, Zills, Shimmies + Review
  • Week 4: Torso Twist, Pivot Bump, Zills, Shimmies + Review

Tribal Belly Dance Formations (Phase 1.5):

New Class begins September 2010Tuesdays 7:00pm-7:55pm & Saturdays 11:00am-11:55am

In this 8 week series, learn to dance the basic tribal belly dance steps in a variety of formations such as duets, trios and quartets.  Learn to travel with your basic steps while playing your zils. We will also expand our vocabulary of steps to include the Propeller Turn, Corkscrew Turn, Walking Taxeem, Walking Bodywave, Box Step with Turn, Arabic Hip Twist, Ribcage Rotation and more shimmies! Plus intro to dancing in a chorus. (Phase 1 must be completed or taken simultaneously as we will not cover the basics.)

  • Week 1: Walking Taxeem / Reverse Taxeem, Basic Formations, Zills + Review
  • Week 2: Egyptian Basic with Half Turn, Changing the Lead, Zills + Review
  • Week 3: Reverse Turn, Walking Bodywave, Chorus, Zills + Review
  • Week 4: Turkish Shimmies, Zills + Review
  • Week 5: Propeller Turn, Corkscrew Turn + Review Basic Formations
  • Week 6: Ribcage Rotation + Review Changing the Lead
  • Week 7: Arabic Hip Twist with Half Turns + Review Chorus

Tribal Belly Dance Combinations (Phase 2):

Tuesdays 7:30-8:25pm through August 2010

Starting in September 2010 Tuesdays 8:00-8:55pm & Saturdays 12:00pm-12:55pm

Further your tribal dance repertoire with fades, levels, layering and more steps. In this fun class, we will expand our dance vocabulary to include variations of all the basic steps plus we will add two more zills patterns to the mix! Also, learn a variety of combinations and 3 formations (diagonal, vertical & dueling duets) Warm up includes core strength exercises infused with yoga style stretches. (Completion of Phase 1 & 1.5  plus instructor permission required.)

  • Week 1: Shoulder Shimmies with Drops & Levels + Review
  • Week 2: Head Slides, Beledi Zill Pattern w/Egyptian Basic, Dueling Duets + Review
  • Week 3: Ninja Camel, Vertical Formation + Review

  • Week 6: Up 2 Down 3 + Military Zill Pattern, Chorus + Review

Tribal Belly Dance Creative Expressions (Phase 3):

Tuesdays 8:30-9:25pm through August 2010

Starting in September 2010: Thursdays 6:30-7:55pm & Saturdays 1:00pm-1:55pm

Advanced (4 modules: 3 weeks each) 

In this performance prep class, we will focus on specific challenging steps in addition to creating mini performance sets.

  • Module 1 (3 weeks): Spinning: Focus on calibrated spot turns & spinning steps used to change the lead.
  • Module 2 (3 weeks): Advanced Steps: Learn a variety of advanced steps including Laybacks, Sunanda, Sahra, Barrel Turn, Double Back, Wet Dog,
  • Module 3 (3 weeks): Level 1 Floorwork / Props: Learn basic floorwork steps and how to effectively cue these steps. Learn to use "your" prop of choice effectively. Knee pads required.
  • Module 4 (3 weeks): Solos: Hone in on "your" solo. Focus on belly rolls, flutters, stops and drops.

Tribal Belly Dance Social (ALL LEVELS)

*Open to everyone in the dance community, especially other dialects of Tribal Belly Dance

Have fun with other women at this rad community event! This is an opportunity to practice your steps with other dancers. Dancers from other Tribal Belly Dance Schools are also welcome. Come experience the beauty of ATS! After dancing improv with new friends, you will understand why we love this dance! Please come casual or dressed up.

Dress for Skin Deep Dance Classes: Full skirt or loose pants, hip scarf, short top or leotard (just wear something comfortable). Bare feet or dance shoes only in dance studio. You will need a pair of zils (finger cymbals). All of these items are available in our studio store!
